The suspect of United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson’s murder, Luigi Mangione has been the star of news headlines for a few months. Mangione’s impressive background including an Ivy League education and his disliking towards corporate America captured the hearts of many and he soon gathered an enormous fan base. In a recent shocking development, US Attorney General, Pamela Bondi’s decision to seek the death penalty for Mangione came to light. This move prompted a harsh response from Mangione’s lawyer who called the decision “barbaric”.

US prosecutor seeks death penalty for Mangione

Attorney General, Pamela Bondi released a statement announcing her decision to seek the harshest punishment for Mangione. In her announcement, she referred to his intentions to murder to be “premeditated” and called CEO Brian Thompson’s murder a “cold-blooded assassination”. She further stated that her decision was in line with President Trump’s agenda to put a stop to such crime and “make America great again.”

President Trump has made his stance on the death penalty clear since his return to office. His support for the use of the harshest punishment for terrorism and other extreme acts of violence aligns with the Attorney General’s decision to seek the death penalty for Mangione. This is because Mangione’s alleged act of killing is seen as an act of terrorism.

The decision comes after President Trump’s order in late 2024 to the Attorney General to seek the death penalty for crimes that she considered warranted it.

Currently, Mangione is charged with murder through the use of a firearm. According to US laws, this makes him eligible for the death penalty if found guilty. He is further charged with two counts of stalking and also a firearms offense. If convicted on these charges, Mangione faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
